Why are workouts good for the brain? One reason is that a healthy mix of cardio and strength training increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. This protein is vital for growing and keeping neurons active. Another is that exercise works to prevent brain inflammation which is a central pathological feature of several acute and chronic brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. It’s advised to get in 150 minutes of exercise a week and to incorporate other cognitive challenges into the workouts.
